This Wednesday, August 6, I will be playing at the Phoenix Landing in Cambridge, opening up for Pat Fontes. 19+ please (why 19, anyway?). This is my first time playing at the Phoenix and I am rather excited. The address is: 512 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA. Nearest public transit is Central Square on the Red Line or numerous busses. (Hint: even though a lot of 4xx busses go to ‘Central Square,’ that’s in Lynn, not Cambridge)
As a preview for Wednesday, I packed all the records I expect to play and let them all out last night. I am still holding onto some surprises, so don’t think that listening to this gets you off the hook for showing up Wednesday! There was also a pretty big pile of new stuff that came in over the past two weeks and thus the recording is a little longer than usual Playlist after the break. Enjoy!

Test Pattern airs every Friday from 6 to 7pm on WZBC, 90.3FM. Each week, a different WZBC DJ hosts a one hour show featuring the music of a particular artist, band, label, or scene of his or her choice.
This week I am presenting the music of UNDERWORLD across several decades, including remixes, weird early works, favorite B-sides. Unfortunately the show’s only an hour long, so in order to play more than 5 tracks I’ll have to play everything on +8 on the turntables or plus 50% on the CD players. Just kidding! No alterations.

A complete version of the film Metropolis has been found in Argentina. Apparently the versions available today are missing 90 minutes of material.
More here.
Does this have anything to do with the music usually covered on this blog? You betcherass. Jeff Mills and Giorgio Moroder both created soundtracks for the silent film, the former going so far as to perform his soundtrack alongside a showing of the film (along with performances by Super Collider and Herbert!)
On a totally different note, I will be playing two sets at River Gods tomorrow night (July 3) as part of the monthly WZBC Countdown that was postponed from last month. Also appearing will be Matt Crook and John Straub. Unfortunately, the bar won’t be open until 2AM, even though it’s the day before a holiday, but there are other area events that will be open afterwards (If I am not totally cracked out I might head over to Elements for the last bit of KLUTE)

After discussion with the venue, the WZBC Countdown will NOT be occurring as planned tonight. From John S., the host:
Hey folks:
Tomorrow night is the first Thursday of the month, which is when WZBC
usually hosts a monthly countdown + 2 featured DJs at River Gods. But
tomorrow also happens to be game 1 of the NBA finals between the
Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. River Gods doesn’t usually
have a TV on in the bar, but they do make an exception when Boston
teams make it into championship games. So River Gods will be showing
the game an a big screen.
River Gods might mute the TV audio, in which case I will spin during
the game, and play WZBC’s countdown as usual between 10 and 11 p.m. I
will also spin after the game.
River Gods might turn up the TV audio, in which case I will just play
a few songs - including the countdown songs - during the commercial
breaks. Either way, I will spin after the game is over.
Go Celtics!

Tomorrow night (Thursday June 5th), Matt Crook and I will be playing some records at River Gods along with the WZBC Countdown for June. Full info here.
Friday night (June 6th) is my Basic Channel Test Pattern! I recorded the mixed portion of this last night and my head damn near fell off so I think you’ll like it too. That starts at 6PM Eastern time on WZBC.

First off, Matt Crook (also from WZBC) and I will be accompanying next month’s WZBC countdown at River Gods, June 5 at 8:30 PM. Each of us will be playing two sets. It’s free, but 21+.
125 River St, Cambridge, MA is the place. Parking’s a bitch, btw.
Also, here’s last week’s playlist, after the break. Read the rest of this entry »
